Aesthetics in Advertising

Early in my design career, while still studying, I created a research and design project exploring aesthetics in advertising, consisting of several print pieces featuring a female supermodel. The textual subject matter discussed the use of attractive models in magazine design and how influential this use of beauty in advertising is in today’s society.

While creating a provocative look similar to many of today’s popular men’s magazines, I also wanted these pieces to convey a dark and mysterious visual feel.

To create this look, I constructed a large black screen to be used as a backdrop. I then arranged targeted lighting at different angles to produce a subtle lighting effect. The model posed on a black satin material which reflected highlights when lit. The photos were shot using a 35mm SLR camera. Post production tasks included photo retouching and layout for a mock magazine cover and accompanying poster.
